Intro to Steeking

Led by Vincent Williams of Visuvio's Crafts, students will learn the tools, techniques, and mechanics of creating steeks within knitted fabric, including learning how fiber content can impact a steek, preparing + reinforcing steek stitches, identifying where to cut, then actually CUT our knitting, and when (or when not to) employ these techniques. Together students will work through the Garden Party Patch by Vincent Williams, walk away with the knowledge of how to fearlessly cut our knitting, and adventure through turning colorwork sweaters into cardigans or create sleeve opening in a colorwork sweater with ease and confidence!

Materials required:

  • At least 100 yards of non-superwash worsted weight yarn per color (2 contrast colors required for project)
  • US 7/4.5mm 16” circular needle
  • 4.0mm crochet hook
  • 6 stitch markers (1 different color or shape that the other 5 markers to designate the beginning of the round)
  • tapestry needle
  • Dental floss or contrasting color fingering weight scrap yarn (optional - to use for basting/ a guide for your center line when steeking)

Homework to complete before the start of class: Purchase the Garden Party Patch Steeking 101 pattern from Visuvio's Crafts. Long tail cast on the total number of sts so we can begin class at the “Starting Checkpoint” of the pattern.
