
Cable Knitting 101: Stairwell Cowl
Led by Vincent Williams of Visuvio's Crafts, students will learn the tools and mechanics of cable knitting, including how cables impact gauge & tension, creating cable crosses/twists of different sizes + different directions, reading your fabric for how to count rows & stitches, reading written cable instructions, reading cable charts, finishing techniques and more. Together students will knit the Stairwell Cowl by Vincent Williams and have a completed cowl by the end of this 3-session course!
Purchase before the start of class:
- Stairwell Cowl from Visuvio’s Crafts
- 375 yards of worsted weight yarn (see below for recommended yarn)
- 1 - US 7/4.5 mm - 24" circular needle for ribbing
- 1 - US 8/5.0 mm - 24" circular needle for body
- Cable needle (Vincent prefers the “J” shaped cable needles, but all shapes of cable needles will be perfect for knitting cables)
- tapestry needle
- 2 (or more) stitch markers
Recommended yarns available in the shop:
- Malabrigo Rios
- Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok
- Illimani Amelie
- Junction Fiber Mill Making Tracks
- Another option is to hold sport weight yarn double. You will need 750 total yards of sport weight yarn

- Knitting cables in the round
- How to use a cable needle
- When you can choose to knit cables without using a cable needle
- Reading cable knitting charts
- Reading written/non-charted cable knitting instructions
- (Optional/bonus - if time permits) Tubular Cast On & Tubular Bind Off
